“Organic physicality of sound” is what stays at the heart of Anahita Abbasi’s music. (Sound Barrier) Each of her works grows out of a fascination with a particular sound and the qualities of the color of a tone. Abbasi’s music has been commissioned and performed all around the world by distinguished musicians ,among others, such as Mahan Esfahani, Steven Schick, Vimbayi Kaziboni, Ensemble Modern, International Contemporary Ensemble, Tak Ensemble, Seattle modern Orchestra, UmeDuo, Long Beach Opera, Wavefield Ensemble, San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, Dissonart Ensemble, Quatuor Diotima, Mivos Quartet, Argonaut Quartet, Ensemble Kollektiv, Thin edge, Contrechamps, neuverBand, Omnibus Ensemble, and etc. Her works have been showcased internationally in festivals such as, Darmstadt Musiktage, Mostly Mozart Festival, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Akademie der Kunste Berlin, Acht Brücken Festival, Radial system, Beethovenfest (Germany), IRCAM – Manifeste Academy (France), Niefnorf, Soundnow Festival- Bent Frequency, Roulette, National Sawdust, Time of Music (Finland), BIFEM (Australia), Klangspuren Schwaz, Impuls Festival, open music (Austria), Sound State festival (Southbank Centre, London), Tectonics (Glasgow), Klang Festival (Copenhagen), Contempuls (Prague), Tongyeong International Music Festival (Korea), Time of Music (Finland), Atlas Festival, Grachten Festival (Netherlands),Borealis Festival (Norway), Festival Archipel (Geneva), and many others. Ms. Abbasi has received several awards, including a work-scholarship from the Experimentalstudio des SWR, Freiburg (2014), a Morton Gold ASCAP young composers award (2015), a nomination for “women composers of our time” (2017) as well as the composition prize of the Acht Brücken Festival (2020). In 2022 she has been awarded the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship in Italy and UCROSS Foundation residency in Wyoming. In addition to being a founding member of Schallfeld Ensemble (Austria), she is also a founding member of IFCA, Iranian Female Composers Association (US.) Anahita Abbasi has studied in KUG university in Austria and worked closely with B. Furrer, P. Billone, G. Aperghis, and F. Bedrossian. In 2014 she moved to the US to pursue her PhD degree in Composition with Rand Steiger at UC San Diego. The Iranian born composer (world citizen- 1985) has been awarded a three year-long residency with Fondation Singer Polignac and Ensemble Le Balcon (France). Her upcoming projects are commissions from ensemble “der gelbe Klang”, Kommas and New Babylon, Podium Esslingen, and Ensemble modern for Darmstadt 2023. Currently, Anahita Abbasi is residing in New York City and in Paris, where she has been awarded a three-year-long residency with Fondation Singer Polignac and Ensemble Le Balcon (Paris, France). Her recent projects were commissions by Ensemble Modern and Jack Adler, which both were premiered at Darmstadt Musiktage this past summer. Her upcoming projects are commissions by Linea Ensemble, solo Bassoon for Rebekah Heller, Meitar Ensemble, solo Harp for Parker Ramsay and a new solo Accordion for Sergej Tchirkov.
